An Ancient People Sailed to the Americas at the Time of the Tower of Babel, but were Destroyed by God

An Ancient People Came Forth at the Time of the Tower of Babel to the Great Deep which Divides the Lands, and were Driven Forth for 344 Days Upon the Great Sea by the Wind, and Landed upon the Shore of the Promised Land

And they Built a Great City by the Narrow Neck of Land where the Sea Divides the Land Northward and the Land Southward

{Ether 1:1}, Torah
And now I, Moroni, proceed to give an account of those ancient inhabitants who were destroyed by the hand of the Lord upon the face of this north country -

{Omni 1:22}, Torah
[When they] came out from the Tower [of Babel], at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people; and the severity of the Lord [eventually] fell upon them according to His judgements, which are just; and their bones lay scattered in the land northward.

{Ether 2:13}, Torah
[But] now I proceed with my record; for behold, it came to pass that the Lord brought forth Jared and his brethren even to that great sea which divides the lands. And as they came to the sea, they pitched their tents; and they called the name of the place Moriancumer; and they dwelt in tents, and dwelt in tents upon the seashore for the space of four years.

{Ether 2:7}, Torah
[But] the Lord would not allow that they should stop beyond the sea in the wilderness, but He willed that they should come forth even to the land of promise, which was choice above all other lands, which the Lord God had preserved for a righteous people.

{Ether 6:4}, Torah
And it came to pass that when they had prepared all manner of food, so that they might thereby subsist upon the water, and also food for their flocks and herds, and whatsoever beast or animal or fowl that they should carry with them - and it came to pass that when they had done all these things, they got aboard of their vessels or barges, and set forth into the sea, commending themselves to the Lord their God.

{Ether 6:5}, Torah
And it came to pass that the Lord God caused that there should be a furious wind blowing upon the face of the waters, towards the promised land; and thus, they were tossed upon the waves of the sea before the wind.

{Ether 6:8}, Torah
And it came to pass that the wind never ceased to blow towards the promised land while they were upon the waters; and thus, they were driven forth before the wind.

{Ether 6:10}, Torah
And thus they were driven forth; and no monster of the sea could break them, nor whale that could mar them; and they had light continually, whether it was above the water or under the water.

{Ether 6:11}, Torah
And thus they were driven forth for three hundred and forty four days upon the water.

{Ether 6:12}, Torah
And they landed upon the shore of the promised land. And when they had set their feet upon the shores of the promised land, they bowed themselves down upon the face of the land, and humbled themselves before the Lord, and shed tears of joy before the Lord, because of the multitude of His tender mercies over them.

{Ether 7:27}, Torah
[For] the Lord had [brought] them across the great deep into the promised land.

{Ether 10:20}, Torah
And they built a great city by the narrow neck of land, by the place where the sea divides the land.

{Ether 10:21}, Torah
And they preserved the land southward for a wilderness, to get game. And the whole face of the land northward was covered with inhabitants.

{Ether 10:28}, Torah
And never could a people be more blessed than they were, and more prospered by the hand of the Lord. And they were in a land that was choice above all lands, for the Lord had spoken it.

It Came to Pass Later, that Nephi Came Out of Jerusalem during the Reign of Zedekiah and Sailed to the Promised Land

And the Lamanites Gave the Land Northward to the Nephites, Even to the Narrow Passage which Led into the Land Southward, and the Nephites Gave All the Land Southward to the Lamanites

{1 Nephi 1:4}, Torah
[Then] it [later] came to pass in the commencement of the first year of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, (my father, Lehi, having dwelt at Jerusalem in all his days); and in that same year, many prophets came prophesying to the people that they must repent, or the great city Jerusalem must be destroyed.

{1 Nephi 2:19 - 20}, Torah
[Then] it came to pass that the Lord spoke to me, saying, "You are blessed, Nephi, because of your faith, for you have sought Me diligently, with lowliness of heart.
And inasmuch as you will keep My commandments, you will prosper, and will be led to a land of promise; indeed, even a land which I have prepared for you; indeed, a land which is choice above all other lands."

{1 Nephi 17:14}, Torah
Indeed, and the Lord also said that, "After you have arrived in the promised land, you will know that I, the Lord, am God; and that I, the Lord, delivered you from destruction; indeed, that I brought you out of the land of Jerusalem."

{1 Nephi 17:8}, Torah
And it came to pass that the Lord spoke to me, saying, "You will construct a ship after the manner which I will show you, so that I may carry your people across these waters."

{1 Nephi 18:1}, Torah
And it came to pass that they served the Lord, and went forth with me; and we worked timbers of curious workmanship. And the Lord showed me from time to time after what manner I should work the timbers of the ship.

{1 Nephi 18:2}, Torah
Now I, Nephi, did not work the timbers after the manner which was learned by men, neither did I build the ship after the manner of men; but I built it after the manner which the Lord had shown to me; therefore, it was not after the manner of men.

{1 Nephi 18:5}, Torah
And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came to my father so that we should arise and go down into the ship.

{1 Nephi 18:8}, Torah
And it came to pass after we had all gone down into the ship and had taken our provisions with us and things which had been commanded us, we put forth into the sea and were driven forth before the wind towards the promised land.

{1 Nephi 18:23}, Torah
And it came to pass that after we had sailed for the space of many days, we arrived at the promised land; and we went forth upon the land and pitched our tents; and we called it the promised land.

{Mormon 2:29}, Torah
And [it came to pass later that] the Lamanites gave the land northward to us [Nephites], indeed, even to the narrow passage which led into the land southward. And we gave all the land southward to the Lamanites.

Their Laws and their Governments were Established by the Voice of the People who Cast in their Voices

But there was a Division Amongst the People - the Freemen Covenanted to Maintain their Rights of Religion by a Free Government, but the King-Men Desired that the Law should be Altered to Establish a King

{Helaman 5:2}, Torah
Their laws and their governments were established by the voice of the people,

{Alma 2:2}, Torah
[But] they began to endeavor to establish Amlici to be a king over the people, for Amlici had, by his cunning, drawn away many people after him; even so much that they began to be very powerful.

{Alma 2:3}, Torah
Now this was alarming to the people of the church, and also to all those who had not been drawn away after the persuasions of Amlici; for they knew that according to their law that such things must be established by the voice of the people.

{Alma 2:6}, Torah
And thus, they assembled themselves together to cast in their voices concerning the matter; and they were laid before the judges.

{Alma 2:7}, Torah
And it came to pass that the voice of the people came against Amlici, so that he was not made king over the people.

{Alma 51:5}, Torah
[But] it came to pass that those who were desirous that Pahoran should be dethroned from the judgement seat were called king-men, for they were desirous that the law should be altered in a manner to overthrow the free government and to establish a king over the land.

{Alma 51:6}, Torah
And those who were desirous that Pahoran should remain chief judge over the land took the name of freemen upon themselves; and thus was the division amongst them, for the freemen had sworn or covenanted to maintain their rights and the privileges of their religion by a free government.

{Alma 51:7}, Torah
And it came to pass that this matter of their contention was settled by the voice of the people. And it came to pass that the voice of the people came in favor of the freemen, and Pahoran retained the judgement seat, which caused much rejoicing amongst the brethren of Pahoran and also many of the people of liberty, who also put the king-men to silence, so that they did not oppose but were obliged to maintain the cause of freedom.

The Design of the Nephites was to Preserve and Defend their Rights and their Country and their Religion, and their Freedom from Bondage and Slavery

And Moroni Caused the Title of Liberty to be Hoisted upon Every Tower in this Chosen Land and Land of Liberty, so that they might Serve God According to their Desires

{Alma 43:9}, Torah
And now the design of the Nephites was to support their lands, and their houses, and their wives, and their children, so that they might preserve them from the hands of their enemies; and also so that they might preserve their rights and their privileges, indeed, and also their liberty, so that they might serve God according to their desires.

{Alma 53:17}, Torah
And they entered into a covenant to fight for the liberty of the Nephites, indeed, to protect the land to the laying down of their lives; indeed, they even covenanted that they would never give up their liberty, but they would fight in all cases to protect the Nephites and themselves from bondage.

{Alma 48:11}, Torah
And [there was a man,] Moroni, [who] was a strong and mighty man; he was a man of a perfect understanding; indeed, a man who did not delight in bloodshed; a man whose soul joyed in the liberty and the freedom of his country, and his brethren from bondage and slavery;

{Alma 48:13}, Torah
Indeed, and he was a man who was firm in the faith of Christ, and he had sworn with an oath to defend his people, his rights, and his country, and his religion, even to the loss of his blood.

{Alma 46:12}, Torah
And it came to pass that he tore his coat; and he took a piece, and wrote upon it - "In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children" - and he fastened it upon the end of a pole.

{Alma 46:13}, Torah
And he fastened on his head-plate, and his breastplate, and his shields, and girded on his armor about his loins; and he took the pole, which had his torn coat on the end, (and he called it the title of liberty) and he bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed mightily to his God for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren, so long as a band of Christians should remain to possess the land.

{Alma 46:16}, Torah
And therefore, at this time, Moroni prayed that the cause of the Christians, and the freedom of the land might be favored.

{Alma 46:17}, Torah
And it came to pass that when he had poured out his soul to God, he named all the land which was south of the land, "Desolation," indeed, and in fine, all the land, both on the north and on the south - "A chosen land, and the land of liberty."

{Alma 46:19 - 20}, Torah
And when Moroni had said these words, he went forth amongst the people, waving the torn part of his garment in the air, so that all might see the writing which he had written upon the torn part, and crying with a loud voice, saying,
"Behold, whosoever will maintain this title upon the land, let them come forth in the strength of the Lord, and enter into a covenant so that they will maintain their rights, and their religion, so that the Lord God may bless them."

{Alma 46:36}, Torah
And it came to pass also, that he caused the title of liberty to be hoisted upon every tower which was in all the land, which was possessed by the Nephites; and thus, Moroni planted the standard of liberty amongst the Nephites.

{Mosiah 29:32}, Torah
And [king Mosiah said,] "I desire that this land is a land of liberty, and every man may enjoy his rights and privileges alike, and I desire that this inequality should no longer be in this land, especially amongst my people, so long as the Lord sees fit that we may live and inherit the land, indeed, even as long as any of our posterity remains upon the face of the land."

{Alma 61:9}, Torah
[And] Pahoran [said,] "I [seek to] preserve the rights and the liberty of my people, I do not seek for power, except only to retain my judgement seat. My soul stands fast in that liberty in which God has made us free" -

{2 Nephi 26:33}, Torah
[For] He denies none who come to Him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and He remembers the heathen; and all are alike to God, both Jew and Gentile.

Because of the Iniquity of the Lamanites, God Caused a Cursing to Come upon them - as they were White, God Caused a Skin of Blackness to Come upon them

And they Became Wild and Ferocious and a Blood-Thirsty People, Full of Idolatry, Dwelling in Tents and Wandering in the Wilderness with a Short Skin Girdle, and their Skill was in the Bow

{2 Nephi 5:20}, Torah
Therefore, the word of the Lord was fulfilled which He spoke to me, saying that, "Inasmuch as [the Lamanites] will not listen to your words, they will be cut off from the presence of the Lord." And behold, they were cut off from His presence.

{2 Nephi 5:21}, Torah
And He had caused a cursing to come upon them, indeed, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against Him, so that they had become like flint; therefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, so that they might not be enticing to my people, the Lord God caused a skin of blackness to come upon them.

{2 Nephi 5:22}, Torah
And thus the Lord God says, "I will cause that they will be loathsome to your people, unless they will repent of their iniquities."

{2 Nephi 5:24}, Torah
And because of their cursing which was upon them, they became an idle people, full of mischief and subtlety, and sought in the wilderness for beasts of prey.

{Enos 1:20}, Torah
[But] I bear record that the people of Nephi sought diligently to restore the Lamanites to the true faith in God. But our labors were vain; their hatred was fixed, and they were led by their evil nature so that they became wild and ferocious, and a blood-thirsty people, full of idolatry and filthiness; feeding upon beasts of prey; dwelling in tents, and wandering about in the wilderness with a short skin girdle about their loins and their heads shaven; and their skill was in the bow, and in the scimitar, and the axe. And many of them ate nothing unless it was raw meat; and they were continually seeking to destroy us.

{Jacob 3:4}, Torah
[But] the time speedily comes, that unless you [Nephites] repent, [the Lamanites] will possess the land of your inheritance, and the Lord God will lead the righteous away out from among you.

{Jacob 3:5 - 6}, Torah
[For] behold, the Lamanites, your brethren, whom you hate because of their filthiness and the cursing which has come upon their skins, are more righteous than you; for they have not forgotten the commandment of the Lord, which was given to our father - that they should have, except it were, one wife, and they should have no concubines, and there should not be whoredoms committed amongst them.
And now, they observe to keep this commandment; therefore, because of this observance, in keeping this commandment, the Lord God will not destroy them, but will be merciful to them; and one day they will become a blessed people.

{Jacob 3:9}, Torah
Therefore, I give a commandment to you, which is the word of God, that you no longer revile against them because of the darkness of their skins; neither will you revile against them because of their filthiness; but you will remember your own filthiness and remember that their filthiness came because of their fathers.

Because of their Wickedness and their Abominations, God Caused Many Great Destructions upon this Land of Promise

And Thus, Many Great Cities were Sunk and Buried in the Depths of the Earth, and Many were Burned, but there was a More Terrible Destruction in the Land Northward, for the Whole Face of the Land was Changed

{3 Nephi 1:10}, Torah
Now it came to pass that when Nephi, the son of Nephi, saw this wickedness of his people, his heart was exceedingly sorrowful.

{1 Nephi 12:4}, Torah
[For] it came to pass that I, [Nephi,] saw a mist of darkness on the face of the land of promise; and I saw lightnings, and I heard thundering, and earthquakes, and all manner of tumultuous noises; and I saw the earth and the rocks, that they tore; and I saw mountains tumbling into pieces; and I saw the plains of the earth, that they were broken up; and I saw many cities, that they were sunk; and I saw many that they were burned with fire; and I saw many that tumbled to the earth because of the quaking.

{3 Nephi 8:5 - 7}, Torah
[And so] it came to pass in the thirty fourth year, in the first month, on the fourth day of the month, there arose a great storm, such a one as never had been known in all the land.
And there was also a great and terrible tempest; and there was terrible thunder, insomuch that it shook the whole earth as if it was about to divide asunder. And there were exceedingly sharp lightnings, such as never had been known in all the land.

{3 Nephi 8:8}, Torah
And the city of Zarahemla took fire.

{3 Nephi 8:9}, Torah
And the city of Moroni sank into the depths of the sea, and the inhabitants were drowned.

{3 Nephi 8:10}, Torah
And the earth was carried up upon the city of Moronihah, so that in the place of the city, there became a great mountain.

{3 Nephi 8:11}, Torah
And there was a great and terrible destruction in the land southward.

{3 Nephi 8:12}, Torah
But behold, there was a greater and more terrible destruction in the land northward; for behold, the whole face of the land was changed, because of the tempest and the whirlwinds, and the thundering and the lightnings, and the exceedingly great quaking of the whole earth;

{3 Nephi 8:13}, Torah
And the highways were broken up, and the level roads were spoiled, and many smooth places became rough.

{3 Nephi 8:14}, Torah
And many great and notable cities were sunk, and many were burned, and many were shaken till the buildings had fallen to the earth, and the inhabitants were slain, and the places were left desolate.

{3 Nephi 8:15}, Torah
And there were some cities which remained; but the damage was exceedingly great, and there were many in them who were slain.

{3 Nephi 8:17}, Torah
And thus, the face of the whole earth became deformed because of the tempests, and the thundering, and the lightnings, and the quaking of the earth.

{3 Nephi 9:1}, Torah
And it came to pass that there was a voice heard amongst all the inhabitants of the earth, upon all the face of this land, crying,

{3 Nephi 9:6}, Torah
"Behold, I have caused the city of Gilgal to be sunk, and the inhabitants to be buried up in the depths of the earth;

{3 Nephi 9:7}, Torah
Indeed, and the city of Onihah and the inhabitants, and the city of Mocum and the inhabitants, and the city of Jerusalem and the inhabitants; and I have caused waters to come up in the stead to hide their wickedness and abominations from before My Face, so that the blood of the prophets and the saints will not come up to Me against them anymore.

{3 Nephi 9:8}, Torah
And behold, the city of Gadiandi, and the city of Gadiomnah, and the city of Jacob, and the city of Gimgimno, I have caused all these to be sunk, and made hills and valleys in the places; and I have buried the inhabitants up in the depths of the earth to hide their wickedness and abominations from before My Face, so that the blood of the prophets and the saints should not come up to Me against them anymore.

{3 Nephi 9:9}, Torah
And behold, that great city of Jacobugath, which was inhabited by the people of king Jacob, I have caused to be burned with fire because of their sins and their wickedness, which was above all the wickedness of the whole earth, because of their secret murders and alliances; for it was they who destroyed the peace of My people and the government of the land; therefore I caused them to be burned, to destroy them from before My Face, so that the blood of the prophets and the saints should not come up to Me against them anymore.

{3 Nephi 9:10}, Torah
And behold, the city of Laman, and the city of Josh, and the city of Gad, and the city of Kishkumen, I have caused to be burned with fire, and the inhabitants, because of their wickedness in casting out the prophets, and stoning those whom I sent to declare to them concerning their wickedness and their abominations.

{3 Nephi 9:11}, Torah
And because they cast them all out so that there were no righteous amongst them, I sent down fire and destroyed them so that their wickedness and abominations might be hidden from before My Face, so that the blood of the prophets and the saints whom I sent amongst them might not cry to Me from the ground against them.

{3 Nephi 9:12
And [thus,] I have caused many great destructions to come upon this land, and upon this people, because of their wickedness and their abominations."
