Surah Al-Haj (The Pilgrimage) 22

Revealed 103rd in the Qur'an

Read the Full Text in Modern English in the Chronological Order of Revelation with References to the Torah and the Gospel

22:1
O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the earthquake of the [Last] Hour *Revelation 6:12 is a terrible thing.

22:2
On the Day you see it, every nursing mother will be distracted from that [child] she was nursing, and every pregnant woman will deliver her burden, *2 Ezra 6:21, *Matthew 24:19, *Mark 13:17 and you will see the people [appearing] intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of God is severe.

22:3
And among the people is he who disputes about God without knowledge and follows every rebellious devil.

22:4
It has been written for [every devil] that whoever turns to him - he will mislead him and guide him to the punishment of the Blaze.

22:5
O People, if you should be in doubt about the Resurrection, then [consider that] indeed, We created you from dust, *Genesis 2:7 then from a drop [of seed], then from a clinging clot, and then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed - so that We may make [your origin] clear to you. And We settle whom We will in the wombs for a specified term, then We bring you out as a child, and then so that you may reach your maturity. And among you is he who is taken in death, and among you is he who is returned to the most decrepit age so that he knows nothing after [once having] knowledge. And you see the earth barren, but when We send down water upon it, it quivers and swells and grows [something] of every beautiful pair.

22:6
That is because God is the Truth and because He gives life to the dead and because He is Powerful over all things.

22:7
And [so that they may know] that the Hour is coming - no doubt about it - and that God will resurrect those in the graves. *2 Ezra 2:16, *John 5:28 - 29

22:8
And among the people is he who disputes about God without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening book [from Him],

22:9
Twisting his neck to mislead from the way of God. There is disgrace for him in the world, and We will make him taste the punishment of the Burning Fire on the Day of Resurrection,

22:10
[While it is said,] "That is for what your hands have put forth and because God is never unjust to [His] servants."

22:11
And among the people is he who serves God on an edge. If he is struck by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by a trial, he turns on his face [away from God]. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is the clear loss.

22:12
He invokes [something] instead of God which neither harms him nor benefits him. That is the extreme error.

22:13
He invokes one whose harm is closer than his benefit - it is wretched as a protector and it is wretched as an associate.

22:14
Indeed, God will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to Gardens in which rivers flow beneath them. Indeed, God does what He intends.

22:15
Whoever should think that God will not support him in this world and the Hereafter - let him extend a way to the heaven, then sever it, and let him see, will his plan remove that which enrages [him]?

22:16
And thus We have sent [the Qur'an] down as verses of clear evidence and because God guides whom He intends.

22:17
Indeed, those who have believed and those who were Jews and the Sabeans and the Christians and the Magians and those who associated [others with God] - indeed God will separate between them on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed God is Witness over all things.

22:18
Do you not see that whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth prostrates to God, and [also] the sun, the moon, the stars, *Nehemiah 9:6 the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But the punishment has come true upon many. And he whom God humiliates - there is no bestower of honor for him. Indeed, God does what He wills.

22:19
These are two adversaries who have disputed over their Lord. But those who disbelieved will have garments of fire cut out for them. Scalding water will be poured upon their heads -

22:20
[So that] what is within their bellies and [their] skins will be melted by it.

22:21
And there [will be] maces of iron for [striking] them.

22:22
Every time they want to get out of [Hellfire] from anguish, they will be returned to it, and [it will be said], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire!"

22:23
Indeed, God will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to Gardens in which rivers flow beneath them. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments will be silk therein.

22:24
And they had been guided [in worldly life] to good speech, and they were guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.

22:25
Indeed, those who have disbelieved and averted [people] from the way of God and [from] the Forbidden [House], ^9:28, ^14:37 which We made for the people - those who are devoted therein and the visitor are equal. And whoever intends [a deed] of deviation or wrongdoing therein - We will make him taste of a painful punishment.

22:26
And when We designated the site of the House for Abraham, ~*Book of Jubilees 22:32 [We said], "Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who circulate and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate.

22:27
And proclaim the Pilgrimage [Hajj] to the people; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass -

22:28
So that they may witness benefits for themselves and remember [or mention] the name of God over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals on known days. So eat from them and feed the miserable and poor.

22:29
Then let them end their untidiness and fulfill their vows and go around the Ancient House."

22:30
That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the prohibitions of God - it is best for him with his Lord. And the grazing livestock are permitted to you, except what is recited to you. So avoid the abomination of idols and avoid false statement,

22:31
Inclining [only] to God, not associating [anything] with Him. And he who associates [others] with God - it is as though he had fallen from the heaven and was snatched by the birds or the wind carried him down into a remote place.

22:32
That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols of God - indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.

22:33
Therein are benefits for you for a specified term; then their place of sacrifice is at the Ancient House.

22:34
And We have made a rite [of sacrifice] for all religion so that they may remember [or mention] the name of God over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. *Exodus 20:24, *Deuteronomy 12:5 - 6, *Deuteronomy 12:11, *Deuteronomy 16:2, *Deuteronomy 16:6 For your God is one God, so submit to Him. And give good news to the humble [before their Lord]

22:35
Who, when God is remembered, their hearts are fearful, and those who are patient over what has afflicted them, and the establishers of prayer and those who spend from what We have provided them.

22:36
And We have made the camels and cattle for you as among the symbols of God; therein is good for you. So remember [or mention] the name of God over them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are down on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy and the beggar. Thus, We have subjected them to you so that you may be grateful.

22:37
Their meat will not reach God, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus, We have subjected them to you so that you may glorify God for that which He has guided you [to]; and give good news to the doers of good.

22:38
Indeed, God defends those who have believed. Indeed, God does not love anyone treacherous and ungrateful.

22:39
Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, God is Powerful to give them help.

22:40
[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without truth - only because they say, "Our Lord is God." And were it not that God checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of God is much remembered. And God will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, God is Powerful and Almighty.

22:41
[And they are] those who, if We give them authority in the land, they establish prayer and give purifying [alms] and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. And the outcome of [all] matters [belongs] to God.

22:42
And if they deny you, so did the people of Noah and 'Aad and Thamud deny [their messengers] before them,

22:43
And the people of Abraham and the people of Lot

22:44
And the companions of Midian. And Moses was denied, so I prolonged enjoyment for the disbelievers; then I seized them, and how [terrible] was My reproach.

22:45
And how many cities did We destroy while they were committing wrong - so they are [now] fallen into ruin - and [how many] abandoned wells and [how many] lofty palaces?

22:46
So have they not traveled through the earth, and [do they not] have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but the hearts are blinded which are within the chests.

22:47
And they urge you to hasten the punishment. *Jeremiah 17:15 - 16 But God will never fail in His promise. And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count. *Book of Jubilees 4:40, *Psalms 90:4, *Sirach 18:10, *2 Peter 3:8

22:48
And how many cities did I prolong enjoyment for while they were committing wrong? Then I seized them, and the [final] destination is to Me.

22:49
Say, "O people, I am only a clear warner to you."

22:50
And those who have believed and done righteous deeds - there is forgiveness and noble provision for them.

22:51
But the ones who strove against Our verses, [seeking] to cause failure - those are the companions of Hellfire.

22:52
And We did not send any messenger or prophet before you except that when Satan desired, he threw in his [own] desire [into a verse]. But God abrogates that [falsehood] which Satan throws in [His verses]; then God makes His verses precise. And God is Knowing and Wise.

22:53
[That is] so He may make what [falsehood] Satan throws in a trial for those who have disease in their hearts and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension.

22:54
And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts become humble to it. And indeed, God is the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.

22:55
But those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt of it until the Hour comes upon them suddenly or the punishment of a barren Day comes to them.

22:56
The kingdom is for God that Day; He will judge between them. So those who believed and did righteous deeds will be in the Gardens of Pleasure.

22:57
And those who disbelieved and denied Our signs - there will be a humiliating punishment for those.

22:58
And those who emigrated for the cause of God and then were killed or died - God will surely provide a good provision for them. And indeed, it is God who is the best of providers.

22:59
He will surely cause them to enter an entrance with which they will be pleased, and indeed, God is Knowing and Forbearing.

22:60
That [is so]. And whoever punishes with the equivalent of that which he was punished with and is then tyrannized - God will surely aid him. Indeed, God is Pardoning and Forgiving.

22:61
That is because God causes the night to enter the day and causes the day to enter the night and because God is Hearing and Seeing.

22:62
That is because God is the Truth, and that which they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because God is the Most High, the Most Great.

22:63
Do you not see that God has sent down water from the heaven and the earth becomes green? Indeed, God is Subtle and Aware.

22:64
What is in the heavens and what is on the earth [belong] to Him. And indeed, God is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.

22:65
Do you not see that God has subjected whatever is on the earth to you and the ships which flow through the sea by His command? And He restrains the heaven from falling upon the earth, unless by His permission. Indeed God is Kind and Merciful to the people.

22:66
And He is the One who gave you life; then He causes you to die *Deuteronomy 32:39, *Wisdom of Solomon 16:13, *4 Maccabees 18:19 and then He will [again] give you life. *1 Samuel 2:6 Indeed, mankind is ungrateful.

22:67
We have appointed rites for every nation which they perform. So do not let them dispute with you over the matter but invite them to your Lord. Indeed, you are upon straight guidance.

22:68
And if they dispute with you, then say, "God is most knowing of what you do.

22:69
God will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection concerning those [matters] in which you used to differ."

22:70
Do you not know that God knows what is in the heaven and earth? Indeed, that is in a Book. Indeed that is easy for God.

22:71
And they serve [idols] besides God which He has not sent down authority for and that which they have no knowledge of. And there will not be any helper for the wrongdoers.

22:72
And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, you recognize disapproval in the faces of those who disbelieve. They are almost on the verge of assaulting those who recite Our verses to them. Say, "Then should I inform you of [what is] worse than that? [It is] the Fire which God has promised those who disbelieve, and it is wretched as a destination."

22:73
O people, an example is set forth, so listen to it. Indeed, those you invoke besides God will never create [as much as] a fly, even if they gathered together for that purpose. *Gospel of Barnabas 152:5 And if the fly should steal a [tiny] thing away from them, they could not recover it from him. The pursuer and pursued are weak.

22:74
They have not appraised God with true appraisal. Indeed, God is Powerful and Almighty.

22:75
God chooses messengers from the angels and from the people. Indeed, God is Hearing and Seeing.

22:76
He knows what is before them and what will be after them. And [all] matters will be returned to God.

22:77
O you who have believed, bow and prostrate and serve your Lord and do good so that you may succeed.

22:78
And strive for God with the true striving [due] to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed any difficulty upon you in the religion. [It is] the religion of your father, Abraham. [God] named you "in submission to God" before [in former Scriptures] *2 Chronicles 30:8, *Psalms 66:3, *Psalms 81:15, *Romans 10:3, *1 Corinthians 15:27 - 28, *James 4:7 and in this [revelation] so that the messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over the people. So establish prayer and give purifying [alms] and hold firmly to God. He is your Protector; and the Protector is excellent, and the helper is excellent.
