Surah Ali 'Imran (Family of Imran) 3

Revealed 89th in the Qur'an

Read the Full Text in Modern English in the Chronological Order of Revelation with References to the Torah and the Gospel

3:1
Alif, Lam, Meem.

3:2
God - there is no god except Him, *Deuteronomy 4:35, *Deuteronomy 4:39, *1 Samuel 2:2, *2 Samuel 7:22, *1 Kings 8:60, *Isaiah 44:6, *Isaiah 44:8, *Isaiah 45:5 - 6, *Isaiah 45:21, *Mark 12:32 the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence.

3:3
He has sent the Book down to you in truth, confirming what was before it. And He sent down the Torah and the Gospel

3:4
Before, as guidance for the people. And He sent down the Criterion. Indeed, those who disbelieve in the verses of God will have a severe punishment, and God is Almighty, the Owner of Retribution.

3:5
Indeed, nothing is hidden from God in the earth or in the heaven.

3:6
It is He who forms you in the wombs however He wills. There is no god except Him, *Deuteronomy 4:35, *Deuteronomy 4:39, *1 Samuel 2:2, *2 Samuel 7:22, *1 Kings 8:60, *Isaiah 44:6, *Isaiah 44:8, *Isaiah 45:5 - 6, *Isaiah 45:21, *Mark 12:32 the Almighty, the Wise.

3:7
It is He who has sent the Book down to you, in it are verses that are decisive - they are the Mother of the Scripture - and others are similar [but vague]. As for those who have deviation in their hearts, they will follow that which is similar to it [in meaning, but out of context], seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its interpretation except God. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.

3:8
[Who say], "Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us mercy from Yourself. Indeed, You are the Bestower.

3:9
Our Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, God does not fail in His promise."

3:10
Indeed, those who disbelieve - their wealth or their children will never avail them against God at all. And it is those who are fuel for the Fire. *Isaiah 9:19

3:11
[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and those before them. They denied Our signs, so God seized them for their sins. And God is severe in penalty.

3:12
Say to those who disbelieve, "You will be overcome and gathered together to Gehenna, and it is wretched as a resting place."

3:13
There has already been a sign for you in the two armies which met - one fighting in the way of God and another of disbelievers. They saw them [to be] twice [their number] by the sight of their eyes. But God supports whom He wills with His help. Indeed there is a lesson in that for those who have eyes [to see]. *Leviticus 26:8, *Joshua 23:10, *1 Maccabees 3:17 - 18

3:14
Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but God has the best return with Him.

3:15
Say, "Should I inform you of [something] better than that? For those who fear [God], there will be Gardens in the presence of their Lord in which rivers flow beneath them, wherein they abide eternally, and purified spouses and pleasure from God. And God is Seeing of [His] servants -

3:16
Those who say, "Our Lord, indeed we have believed, so forgive our sins and save us from the punishment of the Fire,"

3:17
The patient, the true, the obedient, those who spend [in the way of God], and those who seek forgiveness before dawn.

3:18
God witnesses that there is no god except Him, *Deuteronomy 4:35, *Deuteronomy 4:39, *1 Samuel 2:2, *2 Samuel 7:22, *1 Kings 8:60, *Isaiah 44:6, *Isaiah 44:8, *Isaiah 45:5 - 6, *Isaiah 45:21, *Mark 12:32 and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] standing in justice. There is no god except Him, the Almighty, the Wise.

3:19
Indeed, the religion near to God is submission [to God]. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of God, then indeed, God is swift in [taking] account.

3:20
So if they argue with you, say, "I have submitted my face to God, and [so have] those who follow me." And say to those who were given the Scripture and to the Gentiles, "Have you submitted yourselves [to God]?" And if they submit [to God], they are rightly guided; but if they turn away - then there is only the [duty of] notification upon you. And God is Seeing of [His] servants.

3:21
Those who disbelieve in the signs of God and kill the prophets without truth *2 Ezra 1:32, *2 Chronicles 24:19 - 21, *Matthew 23:34 - 37, *Luke 13:34 and kill those who order justice from among the people - give them good news of a painful punishment.

3:22
They are the ones whose deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and there will be no helpers for them.

3:23
Do you not consider those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They are invited to the Book of God so that it should judge between them; then a group of them turns away, and they are refusing.

3:24
That is because they say, "The Fire will never touch us except for [a few] numbered days," and [because] they were deluded in their religion by what they were inventing. *Isaiah 28:15, *Isaiah 28:18, *Gospel of Barnabas 137:1

3:25
So how will it be when We assemble them for a Day about which there is no doubt? And each soul will be compensated [in full for] what it earned, and they will not be wronged.

3:26
Say, "O God, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. [All] good is in Your hand. Indeed, You are Powerful over all things.

3:27
You cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night; and You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give provision to whom You will without account."

3:28
Do not let believers take disbelievers as allies rather than believers. And whoever does that has nothing with God, except when taking precaution against them in fear. And God warns you of Himself, and the [final] destination is to God.

3:29
Say, "Whether you conceal what is in your hearts or disclose it, God knows it. And He knows that which is in the heavens and that which is on the earth. And God is Powerful over all things.

3:30
The Day every soul will find what it has done of good present [before it] and what it has done of evil, it will wish that between itself and that [evil] was a far distance. And God warns you of Himself, and God is Kind to [His] servants."

3:31
Say, "If you should love God, *Deuteronomy 6:5, *Mark 12:30, *Matthew 22:37, *Luke 10:26 - 27 then follow me, [so] God will love you and forgive your sins. And God is Forgiving and Merciful."

3:32
Say, "Obey God and the messenger." But if they turn away - then indeed, God does not love the disbelievers.

3:33
Indeed, God chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of 'Imran over the worlds -

3:34
Some of them [are] descendants from others. And God is Hearing and Knowing.

3:35
When the wife of 'Imran said, "My Lord, indeed I have pledged what is in my womb to You, consecrated, so accept this from me. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing."

3:36
But when she delivered her, she said, "My Lord, I have delivered a female." And God was most knowing of what she delivered, and the male is not like the female. "And I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from Satan, the expelled."

3:37
So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zacharias. Every time Zacharias entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found her with provision. He said, "O Mary, where is this [coming] to you from?" She said, "It is from God. Indeed, God provides for whom He wills without account."

3:38
At that, Zacharias called upon his Lord, saying, "My Lord, grant me a good offspring from Yourself. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication."

3:39
So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, "Indeed, God gives you good news of John, *Luke 1:13 confirming a word from God and [who will be] a noble, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous."

3:40
He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?" *Luke 1:18 The angel said, "Such is God; He does what He wills."

3:41
He said, "My Lord, make a sign for me." *Luke 1:18 He said, "Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak *Luke 1:20 to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the [late] afternoon and the morning."

3:42
And [mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed God has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds. *Luke 1:28

3:43
O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer]."

3:44
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad]. And you were not with them when they cast their pens as to which of them should be responsible for Mary. Nor were you with them when they disputed.

3:45
[Mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed God gives you good news of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, *Luke 1:30 - 31 the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to God].

3:46
He will speak to the people in the cradle ~*Luke 1:64 and in maturity and will be among the righteous."

3:47
She said, "My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?" *Luke 1:34 [The angel] said, "Such is God; He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is.

3:48
And He will teach him the Scripture and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel *John 7:15 - 16

3:49
And [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], 'Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I create [a figure] from clay for you like the form of a bird, *Infancy Gospel of Thomas 2:3 then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of God. And I cure the blind *Matthew 9:27 - 30, *Matthew 20:30 - 34, *Mark 8:22 - 25, *Mark 10:51 - 52, *Luke 18:41 - 43, *John 9:6 - 7 and the leper, *Matthew 8:3, *Mark 1:40 - 42, *Luke 5:12 - 13, *Luke 17:12 - 14 and I give life to the dead *Infancy Gospel of Thomas 9:4 - 5, *Infancy Gospel of Thomas 17:1 - 3, *Infancy Gospel of Thomas 18:1 - 2, *Matthew 9:24 - 25, *Matthew 11:4 - 5, *Mark 5:39 - 42, *Luke 7:12 - 15, *Luke 8:52 - 55, *John 11:41 - 44, *John 12:1, *John 12:9, *John 12:17 - by permission of God. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed there is a sign in that for you, if you are believers.

3:50
And [I have come] confirming what is in my hands of the Torah and to make some of what was forbidden to you [now] lawful for you. *Matthew 12:10 - 12 And I have come with a sign to you from your Lord, so fear God *Matthew 10:28, *Luke 12:5 and obey me.

3:51
Indeed, God is my Lord and your Lord, *Mark 12:29, *John 20:17 so serve Him. *Matthew 4:10, *Luke 4:8 That is the straight path."

3:52
But when Jesus felt disbelief from them, he said, "Who are my supporters for God?" The disciples said, "We are supporters for God. We have believed in God and testify that we are submitting [to Him].

3:53
Our Lord, we have believed in what You sent down and have followed the messenger [Jesus], so write us among the witnesses [to the Gospel of Jesus]."

3:54
And [the disbelievers] planned, but God planned. And God is the best of planners.

3:55
When God said, "O Jesus, indeed I will take your soul and raise you to Myself *Psalms 27:5 - 6, *Psalms 27:10 and purify you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then your return is to Me, and I will judge between you concerning those [matters] in which you used to differ.

3:56
And as for those who disbelieved, I will punish them with a severe punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers."

3:57
But as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them their rewards in full, and God does not love the wrongdoers.

3:58
This is what We recite to you of [Our] verses and the wise Reminder.

3:59
Indeed, the example of Jesus to God is like that of Adam. He created him from dust; *Genesis 2:7 then He said to him, "Be," and he was.

3:60
The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters.

3:61
Then whoever argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you - say, "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of God upon the liars [among us]."

3:62
Indeed, this is the true narration. And there is no god except God. *Deuteronomy 4:35, *Deuteronomy 4:39, *1 Samuel 2:2, *2 Samuel 7:22, *1 Kings 8:60, *Isaiah 44:6, *Isaiah 44:8, *Isaiah 45:5 - 6, *Isaiah 45:21, *Mark 12:32 And indeed, God is the Almighty, the Wise.

3:63
But if they turn away, then indeed - God is Knowing of the corrupters.

3:64
Say, "O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you - that we will not serve [anything] except God and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of God." But if they turn away, then say, "Bear witness that we are submitting [to Him]."

3:65
O People of the Scripture, why do you argue about Abraham while the Torah and the Gospel were not sent down until after him? Then will you not reason?

3:66
Here you are - those who have argued about that which you have [some] knowledge, but why do you argue about that which you have no knowledge? And God knows, while you do not know.

3:67
Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, submitting [to God]. And he was not among the polytheists.

3:68
Indeed, the nearest people to Abraham are those who followed him, and this prophet, and those who believe. And God is the ally of the believers.

3:69
A faction of the People of the Scripture wish they could mislead you. But they do not mislead [anyone] except themselves, and they do not perceive.

3:70
O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of God while you witness [to their truth]?

3:71
O People of the Scripture, why do you mix the truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know [it]? *2 Ezra 12:36 - 37, *2 Ezra 14:6, *2 Ezra 14:26

3:72
And a faction of the People of the Scripture say [to each other], "Believe in that which was sent down to the believers at the beginning of the day and disbelieve it at its end so that perhaps they will return,

3:73
And do not believe [anyone] except those who follow your religion." Say, "Indeed, the [true] guidance is the guidance of God. [Do you fear] that someone should be given [knowledge] like you were given or that they would [thereby] argue with you before your Lord?" Say, "Indeed, [all] bounty is in the hand of God - He gives it to whom He wills. And God is Encompassing and Knowing."

3:74
He selects whom He wills for His mercy. And God is the possessor of great bounty.

3:75
And among the People of the Scripture is he who, if you entrust him with a great amount [of wealth], he will return it to you. And among them is he who, if you entrust him with a silver coin, he will not return it to you unless you are constantly standing over him. That is because they say, "There is no way [of blame] upon us concerning the Gentiles." And they speak a lie about God while they know.

3:76
But yes, whoever fulfills his covenant and fears [God] - then indeed, God loves those who fear [Him].

3:77
Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of God and their [own] oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter, and God will not speak to them or look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them; and they will have a painful punishment.

3:78
And indeed, there is a group among them who alters the Scripture with their tongues so that you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, "This is from God," but it is not from God. And they speak a lie about God while they know.

3:79
It is not for a human [prophet] that God should give him the Scripture and wisdom and prophethood and then he would say to the people, "Be servants to me rather than God," but [instead you should] be rabbis because of what you have taught of the Scripture and because of what you have studied.

3:80
Nor could he order you to take the angels and prophets as lords. Would he order you to disbelief after you had been in submission [to God]?

3:81
And [mention] when God took the covenant of the prophets, [saying], "Whatever I give you of the Scripture and wisdom and then a messenger comes to you confirming what is with you, you [must] believe in him and support him." [God] said, "Have you acknowledged and taken My burden?" They said, "We have acknowledged it." He said, "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses."

3:82
And whoever turned away after that - they were the defiantly disobedient.

3:83
So is it [a religion] other than the religion of God they desire, while [all] those within the heavens and earth have submitted to Him, *1 Corinthians 15:27 - 28 willingly or by compulsion, and they will be returned to Him?

3:84
Say, "We have believed in God and in what was sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the [twelve] tribes [of Israel], and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and to the prophets from their Lord. We make no division between any of them, and we are submitting to Him."

3:85
And whoever seeks a religion other than submission [to God] - it will never be accepted from him, and he will be among those in loss in the Hereafter.

3:86
How should God guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and had witnessed that the messenger is true and clear proofs had come to them? And God does not guide the wrongdoing people.

3:87
Those - their recompense will be that the curse of God and the angels and the people is upon them all together,

3:88
Abiding eternally therein. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved.

3:89
Except for those who repent after that and correct themselves. For indeed, God is Forgiving and Merciful.

3:90
Indeed, those who reject the message after their belief and then increase in disbelief - their [claimed] repentance will never be accepted, and they are the ones astray.

3:91
Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers - the [whole] capacity of the earth in gold would never be accepted from one of them if he would [seek to] ransom himself with it. *Book of Enoch 52:7, *Book of Enoch 63:10, *Book of Jubilees 5:23, *Job 36:18 - 19, *Psalms 49:6 - 7, *Proverbs 11:4, *Zephaniah 1:18, *Ezekiel 7:19 There will be a painful punishment for them, and they will have no helpers.

3:92
You will never attain righteousness until you spend [in the way of God] from that which you love. And whatever you spend - indeed, God is Knowing of it.

3:93
All food was lawful to the Children of Israel *Genesis 9:3 except what Israel had made unlawful to himself before the Torah was sent down. Say, "So bring the Torah and recite it, if you should be truthful."

3:94
And whoever invents a lie about God after that - then those are the wrongdoers.

3:95
Say, "God has told the truth. So follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not among the polytheists."

3:96
Indeed, the first House established for mankind was that at Bakkah ~*Jeremiah 7:12 - blessed and a guidance for the worlds.

3:97
There are clear signs in it [such as] the standing place of Abraham. ~*Book of Jubilees 22:32 And whoever enters it will be safe. And [due] to God from the people is a pilgrimage [hajj] to the House - for whoever is able [to find] a way thereto. But whoever disbelieves - then indeed, God is Free from need of the worlds.

3:98
Say, "O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of God while God is Witness over what you do?"

3:99
Say, "O People of the Scripture, why do you avert those who believe from the way of God, seeking to make it [seem] deviant, while you are witnesses [to the truth]? And God is not unaware of what you do."

3:100
O you who have believed, if you obey a group of those who were given the Scripture, they would turn you back [to being] disbelievers after your belief.

3:101
And how could you disbelieve while the verses of God are being recited to you and His messenger is among you? And whoever holds firmly to God has [indeed] been guided to a straight path.

3:102
O you who have believed, fear God as He truly should be feared and do not die except in submission [to Him].

3:103
And hold firmly to the rope of God all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of God upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became brothers by His favor. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus, God makes His verses clear to you so that you may be guided.

3:104
And let there be a nation [arising] from you inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful.

3:105
And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment.

3:106
On the [Last] Day, [some] faces will turn white and [some] faces will turn black. *2 Ezra 7:55 As for those whose faces turn black, [it will be said to them], "Did you disbelieve after your belief? Then taste the punishment for what you used to reject."

3:107
But as for those whose faces will turn white, *Book of Enoch 38:4, *2 Ezra 7:55 [they will be] within the mercy of God. They will abide eternally therein.

3:108
These are the verses of God. We recite them to you in truth; and God wants no injustice to the worlds.

3:109
Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth [belongs] to God. And [all] matters will be returned to God.

3:110
You are the best nation brought forth for mankind. You command what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in God. If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.

3:111
They will not harm you except for [some] annoyance. And if they fight you, they will show you their backs; then they will not be aided.

3:112
They have been struck by humiliation [from God] wherever they are overtaken, except for a rope from God and a rope from the people. And they have incurred wrath from God upon themselves and have been struck by poverty. That is because they disbelieved in the verses of God and killed the prophets without truth. That is because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.

3:113
They are not [all] the same; among the People of the Scripture is a community standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of God during periods of the night *Psalms 92:1 - 2, *Psalms 119:55, *Luke 6:12 and prostrating [in prayer].

3:114
They believe in God and the Last Day, and they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and hasten to good deeds. And those are among the righteous.

3:115
And whatever good they do - they will never be denied it. And God is Knowing of those who fear [Him].

3:116
Indeed, those who disbelieve - their wealth or their children will never avail them against God at all, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.

3:117
The example of what they spend in this worldly life is like that of a wind containing frost which strikes the harvest of a people who have wronged themselves and destroys it. And God has not wronged them, but they wrong themselves.

3:118
O you who have believed, do not take those other than yourselves as intimates, for they will not spare you [any] ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their hearts conceal is greater. We have certainly made the signs clear to you, if you will use reason.

3:119
Here you are loving them but they are not loving you, while you believe in the Scripture - all of it. And when they meet you, they say, "We believe." But when they are alone, they bite their fingertips at you in rage. Say, "Die in your rage. Indeed, God is Knowing of that within the hearts."

3:120
If good touches you, it distresses them; but if evil strikes you, they rejoice at it. And if you are patient and fear [God], their plot will not harm you at all. Indeed, God is Encompassing of what they do.

3:121
And [remember] when you left your family in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle - and God is Hearing and Knowing -

3:122
When two parties among you were about to lose courage, but God was their ally; and let the believers trust in God.

3:123
And God had already helped you at [the battle of] Badr while you were humiliated. Then fear God; perhaps you will be grateful.

3:124
[Remember] when you said to the believers, "Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should reinforce you with three thousand angels sent down?"

3:125
Yes, if you are patient and fear [God] and [the enemy] suddenly comes upon you, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels having marks [of distinction]

3:126
And God did not make it [occur] except as [a sign of] good news for you and to reassure your hearts thereby. And help is not from [anyone] except God, the Almighty, the Wise -

3:127
So that He might cut off a section of the disbelievers or disgrace them so that they return disappointed.

3:128
Not for you, [O Muhammad, but for God], is the decision whether He should turn to them [in mercy] or punish them, for indeed, they are wrongdoers.

3:129
And whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth [belongs] to God. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And God is Forgiving and Merciful.

3:130
O you who have believed, do not consume interest, doubled and multiplied, *Psalms 15:5, *Ezekiel 18:8, *Ezekiel 18:13, *Ezekiel 18:17, *Ezekiel 22:12 - 13 but fear God so that you may be successful. *Leviticus 25:36 - 37

3:131
And fear the Fire, which has been prepared for the disbelievers.

3:132
And obey God and the messenger so that you may obtain mercy.

3:133
And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for those who fear [God]

3:134
Who spend [in the cause of God] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and God loves the doers of good;

3:135
And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember God and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except God? - And [those who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.

3:136
Those - their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and Gardens in which rivers flow beneath them [in Paradise], wherein they will abide eternally; and the reward of the [righteous] workers is excellent.

3:137
Similar situations [as yours] have certainly passed on before you, so proceed throughout the earth and observe how the end was for those who denied.

3:138
This [Qur'an] is a clear statement to the people and a guidance and instruction for those who fear [God].

3:139
So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are believers.

3:140
If a wound should touch you - a wound similar to it has already touched the [opposing] people. And these days, We alternate among the people so that God may make those known who believe and [may] take witnesses from among you to Himself - and God does not love the wrongdoers.

3:141
And so that God may purify the believers and destroy the disbelievers.

3:142
Or do you think that you will enter the Garden while God has not yet made those of you known who strive [in His cause] and made those known who are patient?

3:143
And you had certainly wished for death before you encountered it, and you have certainly seen it while you were looking on.

3:144
Muhammad is nothing except a messenger. [Other] messengers have certainly passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm God at all; but God will reward the grateful.

3:145
And it is not [possible] for one to die except by permission of God, as a Book [already] determined. And whoever desires the reward of this world - We will give him thereof; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter - We will give him thereof. And We will reward the grateful.

3:146
And how many prophets fought, and [how] many religious scholars [fought] with them? But they never weakened due to what afflicted them in the cause of God, nor did they weaken or yield. And God loves the patient.

3:147
And their words were nothing except that they said, "Our Lord, forgive our sins and the excess [committed] in our affairs and plant our feet firmly and help us against the disbelieving people."

3:148
So God gave them the reward of this world and the good reward of the Hereafter. And God loves the doers of good.

3:149
O you who have believed, if you obey those who disbelieve, they will turn you back on your heels, and you will [then] turn back in loss.

3:150
But God is your Protector, and He is the best of helpers.

3:151
We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve for what they have associated with God of which He had not sent down [any] authority. And their refuge will be the Fire, and it is wretched for the wrongdoers as a residence.

3:152
And God had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing [the enemy] by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the prophet] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them [defeated] so that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and God is the possessor of bounty for the believers.

3:153
[Remember] when you climbed without looking aside at anyone while the messenger was calling you from behind. So God repaid you with distress upon distress so you would not grieve for that which had escaped you or [for] that which had befallen you. And God is Aware of what you do.

3:154
Then after distress, He sent security down upon you [in the form of] drowsiness, covering a faction of you, while another faction worried about themselves, thinking [something] about God other than the truth - the thought of ignorance, saying, "Is there anything for us [to have done] in this matter?" Say, "Indeed, the matter [belongs] completely to God." They conceal within themselves what they will not disclose to you. They say, "If there was anything we could have done in the matter, some of us would not have been killed right here." Say, "Even if you had been inside your houses, those written to be killed would have come out to their death beds." [It was] so that God might test what is in your hearts and purify what is in your hearts. And God is Knowing of that within the hearts.

3:155
Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some [blame] they had earned. But God has already forgiven them. Indeed, God is Forgiving and Forbearing.

3:156
O you who have believed, do not be like those who disbelieved and said about their brothers when they set forth through the land or went out to fight, "If they had been with us, they would not have died or have been killed," so God makes that [misconception] a regret within their hearts. And it is God who gives life and causes death, and God is Seeing of what you do.

3:157
And if you are killed in the cause of God or die - then forgiveness from God and mercy are better than whatever they accumulate [in this world].

3:158
And whether you die or are killed, you will be gathered to God.

3:159
So by mercy from God, you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then trust in God. Indeed, God loves those who trust [in Him].

3:160
If God should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can help you after Him? And let the believers trust in God.

3:161
It is not for any prophet that he would defraud. And whoever defrauds will come with what he defrauded on the Day of Resurrection. Then every soul will be [fully] compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged.

3:162
So is one who pursues the pleasure of God like one who incurs the anger of God upon himself and whose refuge is Gehenna? And it is wretched as a destination.

3:163
They are [varying] degrees with God, and God is Seeing of whatever they do.

3:164
God certainly conferred [great] favor upon the believers when He raised a messenger among them from themselves, reciting His verses to them and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they had been in clear error before.

3:165
Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you, although you had struck [them] with one twice as great, you said, "Where is this from?" Say, "It is from yourselves." Indeed, God is Powerful over all things.

3:166
And what struck you on the day the two armies met was by permission of God so that He might make the [true] believers known.

3:167
And so that He might make those known who are hypocrites. For it was said to them, "Come, fight in the way of God or [at least] defend." They said, "If we had known [there would be] fighting, we would have followed you." They were nearer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And God is most Knowing of what they conceal -

3:168
Those who said about their brothers while sitting [at home], "If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed." Say, "Then prevent death from yourselves, if you should be truthful."

3:169
And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of God as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision,

3:170
Rejoicing in what God has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good news about those after them who have not yet joined them - that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

3:171
They receive good news of favor from God and bounty and [of the fact] that God does not allow the reward of believers to be lost -

3:172
Those who responded to God and the messenger after injury had struck them - there is a great reward for those who did good among them and feared [God]-

3:173
Those to whom the people said, "Indeed, the people have certainly gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "God is sufficient for us, and [He is] Excellent [as] the Disposer of affairs."

3:174
So they returned with favor from God and bounty, no evil having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of God, and God is the possessor of great bounty.

3:175
That is only Satan who frightens [you] among his allies. So do not fear them, but fear Me, if you are [indeed] believers.

3:176
And do not be grieved by those who hasten into disbelief. Indeed, they will never harm God at all. God intends that He should give them no share in the Hereafter, and there is a great punishment for them.

3:177
Indeed, those who purchase disbelief [in exchange] for faith - they will never harm God at all, and there is a painful punishment for them.

3:178
And do not let those who disbelieve ever think that [because] We extend their time [of enjoyment] it is better for them. We only extend it for them so that they may increase in sin, and there is a humiliating punishment for them.

3:179
God would not leave the believers in that [state] you are in [presently] until He separates the evil from the good. Nor would God inform you about the unseen. But [instead], God chooses whom He wills of His messengers, so believe in God and His messengers. And if you believe and fear Him, then there is a great reward for you.

3:180
And do not let those who [greedily] withhold what God has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And the inheritance of the heavens and the earth [belongs] to God. And God is Aware of what you do.

3:181
God has certainly heard the saying of those who said, "Indeed, God is poor, while we are rich." We will record what they said and their killing of the prophets without truth and will say, "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire.

3:182
That is for what your hands have put forth and because God is never unjust to [His] servants."

3:183
[They are] those who said, "Indeed, God has taken our promise to not believe any messenger until he brings us an offering which fire [from heaven] will consume." Say, "Messengers have already come to you before me with clear proofs and [even] that which you speak of. *1 Kings 18:36 - 38, *2 Kings 1:10 - 14, *2 Chronicles 7:1, *Luke 9:54 So why did you kill them, if you should be truthful?"

3:184
Then if they deny you, - so were messengers denied before you, who brought clear proofs and written ordinances and the enlightening Scripture.

3:185
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to the Garden has certainly attained. And the life of this world is nothing except the enjoyment of delusion.

3:186
You will surely be tested in your wealth and in yourselves. And you will surely hear much abuse from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others [with God]. But if you are patient and fear [God] - indeed, that is among the matters [worthy] of determination.

3:187
And [mention] when God took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], "You must make it clear to the people and not conceal it." *Revelation 22:18 - 19 But they threw it away behind their backs *2 Ezra 12:36 - 37, *2 Ezra 14:6, *2 Ezra 14:26 and exchanged it for a small price. And that which they purchased is [indeed] wretched.

3:188
And never think that those who rejoice in what they have brought and love to be praised for what they did not do [themselves] - never think them [to be] in safety from the punishment, [for] there is a painful punishment for them.

3:189
And the kingdom of the heavens and the earth [belongs] to God, *Psalms 89:11, *Job 41:11 and God is Powerful over all things.

3:190
Indeed, there are signs for those of understanding in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day.

3:191
Who remember God while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; *Isaiah 45:18 You are Exalted; then save us from the punishment of the Fire.

3:192
Our Lord, indeed whoever You admit to the Fire - You have disgraced him, and there are no helpers for the wrongdoers.

3:193
Our Lord, indeed we have heard a Caller [Comforter] calling to faith, *John 14:16, *John 14:26, *John 15:26, *John 16:7 [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive our sins and remove our misdeeds from us and let us die with the righteous.

3:194
Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise."

3:195
And their Lord responded to them, "I will never allow the work of [any] worker among you to be lost, whether male or female; you are of one another. So those who emigrated or were evicted from their homes or were harmed in My cause or fought or were killed - I will surely remove their misdeeds from them, and I will surely admit them to Gardens as a reward from God, in which rivers flow beneath them, and God has the best reward with Him."

3:196
Do not be deceived by the movement of the disbelievers throughout the land.

3:197
[It is only] a small enjoyment; then their [final] refuge is Gehenna, and it is wretched as a resting place.

3:198
But those who feared their Lord will have Gardens in which rivers flow beneath them as an accommodation from God, abiding eternally therein. And that which is with God is best for the righteous.

3:199
And indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in God and what was sent down to you and what was sent down to them, [being] humble to God. They do not exchange the verses of God for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord. Indeed, God is swift in account.

3:200
O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear God so that you may be successful.
